Overview
Greece's €100K flat tax regime is the most powerful tool in this entire list for very high earners — if your income is significantly above $200K, you cap your Greek tax at €100K/year regardless. Athens is undergoing a genuine renaissance — neighborhoods like Kolonaki, Glyfada, and Kifissia have excellent international schools, world-class restaurants, and a booming expat community. The Golden Visa program (€250K for restoration properties, €800K in desirable areas) provides residency and EU travel access. Climate is outstanding — 300+ sun days, warm 9+ months. The American Community Schools (ACS Athens) and Campion School are highly regarded international schools.
Why it works
- +€100K/yr flat tax — best deal above $500K income
- +Mediterranean climate — 300 sun days, warm 9+ months
- +ACS Athens and Campion School — excellent int'l education
- +Affordable vs. Western EU at comparable lifestyle
- +EU Golden Visa for residency and travel
Watch out for
- -GPI rank 54 — lower than other EU options
- -Bureaucracy is notoriously difficult
- -Language barrier is real in daily life
- -Dance training is good but not world-class
Dance School Quality
StrongAthens has a solid dance education foundation through the Greek National Opera Ballet School, which is one of the stronger national opera ballet training programs in Southern Europe. Several private studios offer Vaganova-based and RAD programs — Danseur Ballet Academy and Athens Dance School being the most reputable. English-speaking instruction is available due to the large expat community. Not at the Vienna or Budapest level, but a legitimate step above a general city.
Healthcare
goodESY (National Health System) suffered significantly from austerity cuts — public quality is variable and wait times can be long. However, Athens private hospitals (Hygeia, Metropolitan, Mitera) are genuinely excellent, with English-speaking doctors and modern equipment. International private insurance (€200–400/mo family) is strongly recommended and gets you seamless private access. For a family with good private coverage, Athens healthcare is very functional. Non-Athens public hospitals: avoid.
Healthcare IT Career Landscape
Athens has a growing startup scene (Workable, Upstream, Skroutz) but healthcare IT is minimal. Limited career optionality for healthcare IT professionals. The main career use case here is entirely remote W2 work using Greece as a favorable tax base. Greek government digital transformation is creating some IT demand but the local ecosystem is not specialized in healthcare informatics.

€100K/yr flat tax on global income for non-doms (income-independent)
Standard areas now €800K. Restoration properties still €250K. Strong property market recovery.
All figures directional. Tax calculations assume $200K gross W2 income earned while physically abroad (FEIE-eligible under physical presence or bona fide residence test). FICA taxes continue regardless of residence. Consult a US expat CPA before any relocation decision.
